Mass formations of B-17's setting out on daylight raids from Podington, Thurleigh and Chelveston once filled the skies over Turvey.

Several local residents can still recall the harrowing sight of combat damaged aircraft struggling to make the final few miles back to base, some dropping flares to indicate there were injured on board.
